I chose this EDGE project because I have always been interested in doing a humanitarian trip, in some form or another. When I joined the Rural Health Scholars program and heard about the opportunity to be involved with this medical mission, I jumped on it. I know I have been very privileged to have everything I might need to live comfortably readily accessible. I want to use this position I am in to help those who don't have the same opportunities. The people of the Dominican Republic are underserved and are left wanting for many basic needs like medical care. I realized I can use my position as a pre-healthcare provider to work toward a solution to this problem. I can use the skills I am learning and connections I have to help bring healthcare to the Dominicans.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

For my EDGE project, I traveled to the Dominican Republic with Rural Health Scholar students and mentors to give health screenings and provide basic medical care to the underserved people in the Dominican Republic. We worked with Solid Rock, International to coordinate with the doctors and pharmacies there. We traveled to several different locations on the western side of the Dominican Republic over our 4 days of clinics. Our primary objective was to travel to less fortunate communities with little to no medical services. My project took place from May 5th-13th, 2017. We did different things each day in groups, including shadowing physicians, helping in simple dental work, taking blood pressures, filling prescriptions, obtaining anthropometric data of individuals, making house visits to those who were unable to travel to the clinic, and cleaning and preparing instruments. I was grateful to be able to help a lot of people, as well as learn some valuable skills along the way.
